Cake For Breakfast

Yes! You read that correctly, and if you believe this headline taken from the globe and mail, then I have some swamp land to sell you.  Let’s break this down so nobody gets confused by this.

A study published in a journal entitled “Steroids” (really?!) was looking for a correlation between weight loss and calories consumed.   They found that a group consuming a 300 cal breakfast and one taking in 600 cal in the A.M lost about the same amount of weight BUT the one that was on the lower calorie breakfast gained weight back soon after returning to normal eating.  The catch here is the people on the 600 cal breakfast topped off the meal with a dessert item.

Here are some important items I feel are missing from this article:

  • What did these people eat the rest of the day?
  • What were their activity levels?
  • Stress levels?
  • Sleep quality?
  • Was there a standard portion size for the “dessert item”?
  • Was the “dessert item” included in the calorie count?
  • Was the “dessert item” itself even standard?

Sooooooooo much missing info!!  To take the tiny bit of information reported here and come to the conclusion that eating cake for breakfast is not a big deal is kind of insulting.  Also, let’s not forget that losing weight is not always correlated with being healthy.  You can consume nothing but water for the next 40 days of lent and lose TONS of weight.   You might also be dead.

  1. Chris,

You are so right on in critiquing this article. The picture was really misleading on the version I read. There was a huge picture of an amazing looking chocolate cake and the article seemed to really send the message that you should be eating cake for breakfast! I am surprised the globe and mail let this one get published.. certainly the information presented does’t add up. If I get my hands on this study I will send the missing info your way.
