Tell It Like It Is

Dr. Dwight Lundell

Nice stuff coming out recently.  First was the study about GMO and the potential long term affects on our DNA.   Coincidentally not long after, someone fired back with a study about meat.

It’s actually a breath of fresh air to see this editorial straight from the mouth of a heart surgeon, with extensive experience., just telling it like it is.  He’s been wrong for many years and so have many others.

Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease

Common sense shows us that it’s not working.  No matter how many studies for either side come out, more people are dying from heart disease than ever before.   Something’s gotta change.

Murderous Meat

Stop me if you’ve heard this one. RED MEAT WILL KILL YOU! AAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!

I didn’t think that this  Harvard Study would have this much legs but apparently the will by most people to make red meat the scapegoat is still very strong.  I’m not going to get into this too much because it’s already been done to death over the past 2 days.

I am going to point that like MOST studies, this one is also flawed. Big time flawed.  Like they didn’t even try flawed.   Read it yourself to see them all but here’s a few points that stick out.

  1. Nutrition data was collected from a questionnaire.(this is expected to eb accurate?)
  2. It was only collected every 4 years. (Do you remember how much meat exactly you’ve eaten over the past 4 years?)
  3. The group eating more meat, yeah those people were also overweight, less active, smokers.

One good thing is that they recommend eating LESS meat per week and adding some fish and poultry to the mix.  With some easy math apparently you can reverse the mortality increase of red meat by eating more of the others. (???)

We all should know that too much of anything is bad for you. If you are eating red meat 3 times a day, 7 days a week, and wondering why you’re sick then you’re an idiot.  So if anything this study is encouraging variety.  The problem continues to be amounts and portions.  Not red meat itself.

Correlation does not equal causation.

GMO Dangers!

Great article here about Genetically Modified Foods and the side effects they may cause.  It’s been reported that 90% of Soy and rice crops are genetically modified so if this new evidence holds true, it will have HUGE effects on the industry.

The Very Real Danger of Genetically Modified Foods

Monsanto’s reaction is not surprising.  They’ve spent years causing disease in humans with their garbage food production.  Nobody likes to get caught so expect them to lobby hard against any studies that may prove them guilty.

Cake For Breakfast

Yes! You read that correctly, and if you believe this headline taken from the globe and mail, then I have some swamp land to sell you.  Let’s break this down so nobody gets confused by this.

A study published in a journal entitled “Steroids” (really?!) was looking for a correlation between weight loss and calories consumed.   They found that a group consuming a 300 cal breakfast and one taking in 600 cal in the A.M lost about the same amount of weight BUT the one that was on the lower calorie breakfast gained weight back soon after returning to normal eating.  The catch here is the people on the 600 cal breakfast topped off the meal with a dessert item.

Here are some important items I feel are missing from this article:

  • What did these people eat the rest of the day?
  • What were their activity levels?
  • Stress levels?
  • Sleep quality?
  • Was there a standard portion size for the “dessert item”?
  • Was the “dessert item” included in the calorie count?
  • Was the “dessert item” itself even standard?

Sooooooooo much missing info!!  To take the tiny bit of information reported here and come to the conclusion that eating cake for breakfast is not a big deal is kind of insulting.  Also, let’s not forget that losing weight is not always correlated with being healthy.  You can consume nothing but water for the next 40 days of lent and lose TONS of weight.   You might also be dead.

Weight Lifting and Cancer

Interesting new study here showing that Cancer patients who suffer most have significantly less muscle mass than those who suffer less.  Basically I think what we’re talking about here is prevention.   Nobody knows that exact cause of cancer but if you live a healthy lifestyle that includes lifting weights and good nutrition to maintain muscle mass, then even if you do come down with an illness, even one as serious as cancer, the affects can be less arduous.  If this is the case then imagine how much a lifestyle like that lowers your risk of ever getting cancer in the first place.

Here’s the article : Props to Concordia U.  Nice to see good stuff coming out locally.

Massage as Anti-Inflammatory

I’ve been trying for a while to stop people from taking anti-inflammatory meds.  Even over the counter Advil.   These super strong pills and drugs stop the pain indeed, but then they stop the healing process all together.   There’s also studies that suggest they weaken connective tissue at the same time leaving you prone to further injury.

Now researchers are showing that Massage Therapy acts in many ways the same as anti-inflammatories and on top of that, they can enhance some of the benefits of exercise.   Combine that with the fact that you’re not putting big pharma garbage into your body and you’re winning all day!  Check out the article, How Massage Aids Muscle Healing, and then contact us to make an appointment with our own Malcolm Mauricette.  Do something good for yourself for a change.

Organic Baby Food Recalled

Yikes!

Once again, ANYTHING IN A BAG, BOX, BOTTLE, OR CAN IS PROCESSED!  Just because it says fancy words like organic, whole grain, all natural, Gluten free, doesn’t make it immune.  If it’s packaged, it’s been processed.  As a result it is more susceptible to mismanagement and poor quality control.

Great “Weight” Expectations

Interesting article in the Gazette about how society perceives “weight” or the quantity of it as the case may be.  The author speaks about being overweight and being accepted for who you are and how weight should not be involved in that acceptance.   This is a huge issue and I whole heartedly agree with the author.  Just as people should not be judged by their race, religion, colour, tattoos they have or cloths they wear, they should also not be judged by their weight.

That being said what he doesn’t stress enough (mentions it briefly in brackets like these) is that if you are overweight YOU ARE NOT HEALTHY.  At the very least you are at risk for a bevy of health issues.   That’s just a fact.   You don’t have to care about it or what other people think, but you should be aware and it’s a part of the debate that gets skirted around often.

Anyways this article isn’t even about that. It’s mostly about Adele, the singer, and how there’s a rumour that she may want to lose weight. People care about this apparently, and are angry that she’s betraying those who have supported her thus far.  This same thing happened to actor Jonah Hill who lost weight and was told he would no longer be funny.  So what’s happening here is people who are overweight, are angry because those that made them feel OK about being overweight are losing the weight, and that’s always associated with conforming to hollywood’s stereotypes and never about the fact that perhaps these celebs want to be healthier.

WOW! HOW SELFISH ARE YOU!!

This could all be fixed by encouraging people not to “lose weight” but instead to “become more healthy”.   Don’t even think about he weight.  That number fluctuates drastically for everyone no matter what the size.  If you wake up too often over the course of the night you could be heavier the next day.  It’s not that reliable of an indicator.   Instead, in this new year of 2012, focus on health.  Eat right, be active, be happy, a sound mind is more important than a sound body.  Do this and the results will be everything you want including but not exclusive to, weight loss.

Oh by the way here’s the article:
